The Association of Small & Medium Enterprises is a not-for-profit organisation that welcomes all from the entrepreneurial community into our membership. ASME has through the years worked towards creating a conducive and fair environment that facilitates growth and development for all local enterprises.

ASME works closely with organisations within the Singapore government and the private sector to ensure that collectively, the Association can deliver on that vision through a wide variety of business-centric initiatives and activities.

Founded by a group of local entrepreneurs in 1986, ASME has grown from strength to strength and today remains one of the foremost champions of the pro-enterprise movement in Singapore.

Looking ahead, ASME will continue to build on expanding a larger network to widen the business contacts of its members; ease access to capital funding by promoting public and private financing schemes and provide local entrepreneurs with advisory and peer support.

With a wide array of services and programmes, ASME is well-poised to facilitate the growth and development of a larger pool of SMEs in Singapore as it looks towards creating not just a conducive business environment but also an effective platform for the success of local enterprises.

Together with a strong focus on entrepreneurship and the individual behind the enterprise, ASME will continue to strive towards enhancing our position as the business association for entrepreneurs by entrepreneurs.

On 6 June 1930, 75 leading personalities representing 20 different nationalities met at Raffles Hotel to inaugurate the first Rotary Club of Singapore. Its charter President was Dato’ (Sir) Roland Braddell. The Club received its charter as Club No. 3360 on the roll of Rotary International.

By 1939 membership rose to 148; the most cosmopolitan club in the world. In 1952 it sponsored the formation of the Rotary Club of Johore Bahru; then, the Rotary Club of Singapore West in 1960 and the Rotary Club of Singapore East in 1965. The Club celebrated its Golden Jubilee by fathering the Rotary Club of Raffles City. In 1995 it again sponsored another club, this time in Cambodia, the Rotary Club of Phnom Penh, and in 2007 – the Rotary Club of Singapore Centennial. Since its inception the Club has led many ongoing iconic projects. The more recent ones are:

The Book of Humour – Launched in 1992, 80,000 copies have been sold raising over $500,000 to finance humanitarian projects, including aiding disaster victims in neighbouring countries. In the 7th reprint the then President of Singapore, Mr Wee Kim Wee penned a special congratulatory message and endorsed the book. In 2004, a sequel named The Best of Humour was added.

The Entrepreneur of the Year Award – Launched in 1989, this Award acknowledges the accomplishments of local entrepreneurs who epitomise the true meaning of entrepreneurship.

The Gift of Sight Project in Cambodia – This was started in 1995, Rotarians and non-Rotarian eye surgeons from Singapore and India conducted training sessions and operations. Their efforts prevented many from becoming blind. In 2007, the club established a well-equipped Rotary Eye Care Centre in Pursat.

The Interact & Rotaract Clubs – Working with young people has always been regarded by the Club to be an important and meaningful facet of Rotary work. Interact Clubs are for students in the secondary schools and junior colleges. Rotaract Clubs are for young adults aged 18 to 30. These clubs promote good citizenship and commitment to community service. The 1st Interact Club was
established in 1963 and the 1st Rotaract Club in 1972. Today, the Club sponsors 9 Interact Clubs and 2 Rotaract Clubs.

The Rotary Club of Singapore continues to be an active great-grandfather Club, full of vigour and ever dedicated to the principles and ideals of Rotary, embedded in its motto “Service Above Self”.
